Raising a child comes with its own set of challenges and rewards. The gifted child typically has advanced cognitive abilities and is further ahead academically than his/her peers. Yet gifted children may lag socially or emotionally. Its is not surprise, then, that gifted children require teaching that is "different from the norm. (National Association for Gifted Children) In order for gifted children to get the support services mandated in public schools, parents must act as their advocates - until they are ready to advocate for themselves.

The bottom line is, if you don't advocate for your child, no one else will.

To be an effective advocate, start by:
- learning your rights and your child's rights
- connecting with community resources and agencies
- networking with other parents and advocacy groups
